Day 6 – July 15, 2017 – From the mountains to the Snake River

WIAdmin, 23. Juli 2017

At 10am we start to carry our equipment along the difficult 3-kilometer-long path to the snake river. The biggest challenge: 3 rafts that weigh more than 90 kilograms each.

Johannes, Keefer, Daniel and Tobi are the “heavy transport guys” who tie the rafts to a homemade stretcher of sorts, and with the help of shoulder straps, carry them in 6 hours to the river. The rest of the team brings the other 500 kg of gear.
After the work is done we fortify ourselves with a huge pot of curry. We glance uneasily down at the valley of the Snake River, which is veiled in smoke from far-away forest fires in the western valleys.

On the last equipment transport, at about 1130pm, Tobi and Johannes discover wolf tracks that were less than 15 minutes old. The magic and wildness of this place leave no doubts: We simply must protect the wild Peel Watershed for ourselves and for the future.

In the wilderness, the water is also wild. We put the rafting boats into the water on day seven, and the first leg of the Snake River proves to be an adventure for our expedition
